  • Awards and Recognition

When every K-5 student receives 60 minutes of music education a week, there are four levels of band, five levels of orchestra, a children’s choir, several middle school choral groups, musical productions for every 5th grade and an annual spring musical at the junior high, it’s not surprising that District 28 receives continuous recognition from the NAMM Foundation with the Best Communities for Music Education.

District 28 is one of 32 districts in Illinois to receive this award in 2024 for its outstanding efforts to provide access to music education for all students. It is the eighth time the district has received recognition from the NAMM Foundation.

“I am grateful to be a part of a team of music educators that continually strive to provide the best music education for our kids,” said Band Director Greg Scapillato, who completed the survey application for the award. “I am also deeply grateful for the leadership and support from our administration and our Board of Education. I am continually humbled by the dedication and support of our parents, and the amazing achievements of our students.”

According to the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation, researchers have found that after two years of music education, participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers. Students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school but also to attend college.

“I am very proud for our district to receive this award as an ongoing celebration of the community’s commitment to music education. Congratulations to all the music educators for their hard work and dedication,” said Superintendent Dr. Jason Pearson.

Young Explorers Early Childhood Education logo

District 28’s Young Explorers Early Childhood program is accepting 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children for the 2024-25 school year.

Young Explorers features a blended model to serve students identified as typically developing, at-risk, and in need of special education services. The program is located at Westmoor School, 2500 Cherry Lane, Northbrook, and is open to all students who live within District 28 boundaries.

The program also has rolling enrollment so students can enter any month of the year, space permitting. Interested parents should make a screening appointment by contacting Helene Josephson at 847-504-3809. Children must be 3 years old on the day of their screening.

A row of parked school buses

We are excited to announce that First Student’s FirstView mobile app is now operational.  This mobile app provides several features designed to help parents and students monitor their bus routes, including:

  • Live Tracking
The FirstView map screen shows you the live location and direction of your student’s bus, your student’s stop schedule for the current day, and timestamps for school arrivals and departures.
  • Predictive Stop Arrival Times and Custom Alerts and Alert Messages
You can also  set up push or email notifications for when your student’s bus is a chosen distance (e.g. 1 mile), or number of minutes away from the stop.  Additionally, the District and transportation provider have the ability to send instant notifications regarding route delays.
  • Additional User Notifications: Main users of the FirstView® Parent App can connect three additional email accounts to receive email alerts.
  • Multi-Stop View
Buses for all of your students can be tracked simultaneously.  Using individual colors for each student, FirstView enables users to view multiple student routes on a single map.
